Papermaking / Paper Recycling PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 19 November 2008 08:17

Thanks to four used blenders donated by members of the congregation, the 7th & 8th Graders have embarked upon a paper making and recycling art project. Various kinds of paper (notebook, catalog, magazine, newspaper, etc.) are put in a blender with about 2 cups of water. Sometimes, other natural and man-made products are added such as leaves and the colored foil from Hershey Kisses. The "pulp" then goes into a deckle box, water is screened out, sponged out, and pressed between couch sheets to dry. The results are impressive. Many will be displayed in the main hallway.

A Day At the Opera PDF Print E-mail

The 7th-8th Grade class took the Metra downtown today for a 1.5-hour tour of the Civic Opera House. Erected in 1929, the house has lost none of its glitter but has made some advancements in technology. The students had access to various props, cat walks, costume rooms, and the orchestra pit during this backstage tour of the Chicago Lyric Opera's home as the hands prepared the stage for the opening night performance of Porgy and Bess. Who knew that opera could be this much fun? Later this school year, students will get to see an actual performance.

Veteran's Day was commemorated at St. Paul's Lutheran School on November 11. Veterans give individual presentations in various classrooms, such as the one pictured here (left) by Mr. Henry Setton who served on the heavy cruiser, the U.S.S. Quincy, which was the flagship of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his Yalta conference with Churchill and Stalin.

Veterans who are members of our congregation attending the all-school assembly in the gymnasium included Mr. Bob Taylor, Mr. Herold Wind, Mr. Henry Setton and Mr. Donald Zirzow.

Pictured on the right is an SPLS alum, David Kivi, who is currently the commander of the local Brookfield VFW post. He gave a presentation on how to treat the flag respectfully and to fold the flag properly. The children also sang patriotic songs accompanied by Mr. Zimmer. Special thanks to Mrs. Anne Clark for setting this up and to Jenny Lams for serving the caramel apples after the event!

After an undefeated regular conference season, the boys' varsity volleyball team accepted an invitation to play in a statewide Lutheran tournament held in Springfield, IL on the weekend of November 7-9. They finished ninth out of ten teams but competed well given the fact that this is only the second season in which the boys have had a team. Special thanks to Coaches Steve Clark and Joanne Jerousek. Grades 5-8 traveled downtown by train to Union Station and walked the remaining mile to attend a youth concert performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra entitled Echoes of Nations. Selections from around the world were featured, including one played by a very gifted 16-year-old cellist for a Dvorak piece and another played by two Brazilian brothers on guitars for the Winter and Summer movements of a Manuel de Falla concerto.
